Hachette Book Group Joins Publishers and Authors in Lawsuit Against Meta Platforms Over AI Copyright Use

Protecting Authors, Defending Creativity.

Hachette Book Group (HBG) joined a coalition of leading publishers and author Scott Turow in filing a lawsuit against Meta Platforms, Inc. to address the unauthorized use of copyrighted works in the development of AI systems.

This action reflects a shared commitment across the publishing industry to uphold the principles that sustain creativity, protect intellectual property, and ensure that authors are properly recognized and compensated for their work. As Hachette Book Group's CEO, David Shelley, shared, “Copyright is the bedrock of all creative industries.”

Copyright protections are essential not only to authors and publishers, but to the broader ecosystem that supports the creation, distribution, and discovery of ideas. Innovation must be built responsibly—on a foundation that respects the rights of creators and the value of original work.

Hachette Book Group is proud to stand alongside its peers and authors in support of these principles.
