Dunton proudly announces the opening of Kilchoan Estate in June 2026, the brand’s first European property and a landmark addition to its portfolio of intimate retreats. Set across 13,000 acres of private wilderness between Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn, Kilchoan Estate by Dunton offers rare year-round access to one of the most remote and unspoiled corners of the Scottish Highlands, reachable only by boat or on foot.
“Kilchoan Estate represents a deeply personal vision for Dunton -- one rooted in stewardship, authenticity, and a profound respect for place. This is not simply an opening, but the revival of a storied Highland landscape, where guests can experience an extraordinary sense of remoteness without sacrificing the warmth, hospitality, and culinary integrity that define our brand,” said Edoardo Rossi, Executive Vice President of Dunton. “Under the careful guardianship of Katrin and Christoph Henkel, Kilchoan sets a new benchmark for what it means to create a truly immersive, conservation-led luxury experience in Europe.”
Kilchoan Estate’s story stretches back centuries (its ownership can be traced as far back as the 12th century), rooted in the storied and often turbulent history of the West Highlands. Once part of a traditional Highland estate shaped by clan heritage, agricultural life, and the profound impact of the Highland Clearances, the land has long been defined by resilience and stewardship. In recent years, the estate was acquired by Katrin and Christoph Henkel, who envisioned restoring and preserving this extraordinary landscape while creating a hospitality experience that honors its past. Under their ownership, the estate has been sensitively revitalized, maintaining its architectural integrity and cultural authenticity, while thoughtfully adapting it for modern guests. Their commitment mirrors the philosophy that first guided the restoration of the 1800s ghost town of Dunton Hot Springs in the Colorado Rockies: safeguarding heritage while allowing guests to meaningfully inhabit it.
Summer 2026 will see Kilchoan Estate by Dunton open with five fully restored private stone and wood cottages (ranging from two- to five-bedroom layouts), sensitively renovated by London-based Waldo Works, which also oversaw the recent, multi-year phased renovation of the historic buildings at Dunton Hot Springs. Two additional cottages will be unveiled in early 2027.
The design of Kilchoan Estate by Dunton is deeply rooted in its Highland setting, drawing on local vernacular architecture and a rich palette of natural materials (stone, pine, and slate) to ensure each building sits harmoniously within the landscape. Interiors reflect the textures and tones of the surrounding environment, from sea-inspired hues in Rum Cottage to textiles sourced from esteemed British and Irish makers such as Bute, Mourne Textiles, and the Isle Mill. Furnishings balance craftsmanship and comfort, pairing bespoke Scottish pieces like Angus Ross tables and Adam Ross lighting with thoughtfully selected European designs, while layers of woven textiles, sheepskins, and curated details create a sense of warmth and tactility. Art is personally selected by owner Katrin Henkel, whose discerning eye brings an additional layer of character and individuality to each space. The result is a design approach that feels both refined and deeply connected to place, quietly luxurious, environmentally conscious, and intentionally crafted to enhance the raw beauty of one of Scotland’s most extraordinary landscapes.
