Aarunya Nature Resort, the award-winning boutique retreat nestled in Sri Lanka’s central highlands and an Aahaasa Collection flagship recently named to TIME World’s Greatest Places 2026, has announced the launch of its Nature Pavilion, a purpose-driven hub dedicated to ecological research, conservation, and immersive guest education. Set within the property’s biodiversity-rich landscape overlooking the UNESCO-listed Knuckles Mountain Range, the Pavilion has been conceived as a research facility, tea and spice production centre, and interpretive space, designed to bridge academic study with meaningful guest engagement while supporting conservation initiatives.
“At Aarunya, sustainability is not a program; it is the foundation of everything we do and a constantly evolving pursuit,” said Nath Rankothge, co-founder and architect of Aarunya Nature Resort. “The Nature Pavilion represents a natural evolution of our ethos, creating a space where design, science, education, and hospitality intersect to protect and celebrate the extraordinary ecosystems that surround us.”
Handcrafted using locally sourced bamboo, mud bricks, and natural renders, the Pavilion will serve as an active research hub supporting biodiversity monitoring, habitat restoration, and agroforestry practices, while also offering curated programming including guided nature trails, birdwatching, and biodynamic agricultural experiences. Guests can further engage with Sri Lanka’s spice heritage through the resort’s working gardens, foraging activities, and culinary and wellness experiences rooted in local traditions.
“The minor imperfections in the structure and finishing are welcomed as a testament to the process and the challenges we faced,” added Rankothge. “What appears to be a simple design required a complex construction journey, demonstrating the potential of sustainable, renewable, and locally sourced materials.”
The launch builds on Aarunya’s broader sustainability initiatives, including reforestation, organic and biodynamic farming, water conservation, and a net-zero energy and waste philosophy. Through the Nature Pavilion, the property aims to deepen its environmental impact while positioning Sri Lanka as a leader in regenerative, conservation-driven tourism.
