Cultural Counsel Announces Latest Publication, The Deep State: Art, Culture & Florida

Cultural Counsel is proud to announce its latest publication, The Deep State: Art, Culture & Florida, an ode to Florida’s strange beauty and the culture that's evolved within it. The book charts the evolution of the arts in Florida from the state's beginning until the present day, exploring forgotten histories, overlooked perspectives, and the artists, icons, and outsiders at the center of it all.

The Deep State features a cover designed by Harmony Korine. Inside are original contributions and rare archival works by E.G. Barnhill, Zaha Hadid, The Florida Highwaymen, Damien Hirst, Robert Huff, The Master of the Fertility of the Egg, Nicolas Lobo, Lee Moriarty, LeRoy Neiman and J.C. Newman, Tobias Rehberger, Anastasia Samoylova, George Sánchez-Calderón, John Singer Sargent, Richard Serra, Andy Sweet, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Doris Wishman, Bunny Yeager—and more!

Readers will also find writing by Gary Indiana, personal reflections by artists like Naomi Fisher and Kevin Arrow, and conversations between Franklin Sirmans and Jorge Pérez, Arden Sherman and Beth Rudin DeWoody, and Adam Abdalla and Craig Robins. Also, Addison Kirst tracked down Florida Grindcore legend Spinach from Assück.

While The Deep State champions the individuals at the heart of Florida’s cultural legacy, it was created with the support of Architecture Sarasota, The City of Miami Beach, Graphicstudio, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, The Lightner Museum, Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places, Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg, The Norton Museum of Art, and The Rubell Museum.

The Deep State: Art, Culture & Florida, which is being published as Cultural Counsel celebrates its 10th anniversary, and was envisioned by Adam Abdalla, edited by Hunter Braithwaite, and produced by Addison Kirst of Des Pair Books. It was designed by Forth + Back in Los Angeles. Juan A. Ramírez contributed writing. The Deep State is the latest publication by Cultural Counsel, which published the acclaimed online journal Affidavit from 2016 to 2021, and then the quarterly whitepaper Discovery. Adam Abdalla’s contemporary art and professional wrestling brand Orange Crush published three volumes of a print periodical, as well as Visitors, a book of photographs by Nick Karp. The Deep State was published with support from The Moore.

The book will be released on December 2, 2025, during Miami Art Week. Individual copies and information on wholesale purchasing can be found HERE.
