Introducing Late Checkout: The New Digital Platform for Food, Travel, and Culture

Late Checkout Jet Sets into the Media Landscape

Billed as a “cheat sheet for trendsetters and go-getters for all things food, drink and travel,” Late Checkout is a new digital platform offering daily content via website and social media, as well as a daily newsletter featuring the latest trends in bars and restaurants, curated city guides, design inspiration, shoppable packing lists and notable cultural moments.

Named for the request travelers often make when hoping to sleep in a little before checking out of a hotel, Late Checkout is meant to reference making things easier for the reader. The tag line, “Stay in bed. We’ve got you,” lets the reader know that Late Checkout aims to be a user-friendly resource for those eager to "stay in bed" while staying informed.

Founded by Rachel Ayotte, CEO of bread & Butter, a communications collective focused exclusively on the hospitality industry, Late Checkout also serves as a positive and inclusive resource in a cluttered and often stressful media landscape. “Eating, drinking and traveling are universally considered things that most people enjoy,” says Ayotte. “In what feels like a never-ending, often depressing news cycle, Late Checkout serves as a feel-good community where readers get stress-free content that reminds them there are still good times to be had.”

Become a Trendsetter

Late Checkout came to life in response to a perceived to be a gap in the market. “There really isn’t a platform that focuses on the intersection of food, drink and travel and the cultural zeitgeist,” says Ayotte.  “There are plenty of options with a unilateral focus, but there wasn’t a one-stop-shop where readers can get timely, compelling and fun information through a hospitality-centric lens.”

As the head of a communications company, it dawned on Ayotte that her team not only sees trends and gets information well before anyone else, but they also often set trends by connecting the dots between what they see happening across the globe. “Why not become the source?” says Ayotte.  “We have access to all of this information that we know people would like. So, instead of waiting on other outlets to cover what we think is entertaining or interesting, we can just do it ourselves.”

“We were heavily inspired by the success of The Skimm, which started as a daily digest of news stories intended to be simple and easy to read, as well as Daily Candy, a pioneer in crafting fun and timely content delivered straight to your Inbox,” shares Ayotte.  With the growth of platforms like Substack, as well as the crowded marketplace of news sources, Ayotte and her team saw that readers were looking towards social media, as well as newsletters, to create and curate the news they want to see.
