Lucifer Lighting, the luxury lighting company to star architects, designers and the wider creative industry, celebrated its 45th anniversary by hosting an unforgettable block party on Jay Street in Tribeca.
One of the most celebrated names in American design, Lucifer Lighting was founded by Gilbert Mathews, a Texan entrepreneur whose family once owned the legendary local department store Frost Bros. Headquartered out of San Antonio, Lucifer Lighting has spent the last 45 years illuminating some of the world’s most beautiful spaces – from the United Nations building in New York to Eleven Madison Park and flagship stores for Apple, Cartier, Gucci, Chanel and more. The company is now the go-to lighting manufacturer for some of the buzziest names across architecture and design, supplying leading clients across the fashion, art, hospitality and commercial real estate industries.
The company’s 45th anniversary party took place at its new showroom, which was designed by Gensler and opened in New York City last year, and spilled onto the streets of Tribeca, where guests were greeted with Texan BBQ supplied by Old Smokey, an authentic smoke machine built by Lucifer Lighting’s engineers in San Antonio and driven to New York City for the occasion.
Live music was curated by Randall Poster, music supervisor behind some of today’s most popular films and TV series, including Hit Man and Killers of the Flower Moon, with DJ sets by Stretch Armstrong and Isabella Massenet. Artworks by Black figurative painter Jammie Holmes, who is based in Dallas and will open a new exhibition in New York at Marianne Boesky in October 2024, were on view as part of Lucifer Lighting’s ongoing collaboration with contemporary art galleries, presented alongside a custom-installation of Lucifer Lighting component parts designed by Gensler specifically for the company’s showroom in New York City. The space was beautifully adorned with florals arranged by Audrey Hilfiger, niece of acclaimed fashion designer, with a custom-designed cake by Elizabeth Mayhew, setting the perfect backdrop for a night celebrating 45 years of the beloved lighting brand.
The event was hosted by Lucifer Lighting’s Gilbert Mathews (Founder and CEO), Suzanne Mathews (Director), Alexandra Mathews (Executive Vice President) and Roselyn Mathews (Chief of Staff and Vice President of Brand).
The night’s guest list included a diverse group of notable figures across various creative industries. Leading names in architecture and design turned out in abundance to celebrate this milestone in Lucifer Lighting’s history, from Craig Dykers and Elaine Molinar at Snøhetta and Steven Ehrlich (FAIA, RIBA), Member of MoMA's Architecture and Design Committee, to lighting designer Suzan Tillotson, along with interior stylist Colin King and Sarah Harrelson, founder and editor-in-chief of CULTURED magazine. Artists such Jammie Holmes, Anthony McCall and Jared Owens were in attendance, alongside representatives from art galleries Berry Campbell Gallery, DIMIN, Gagosian and Marianne Boesky. From the world of social media, Lucifer Lighting welcomed online talent Nina Blumberg and Nino Ferrari-Mathis, two influencers shaping online trends around design.
