Delvaux, the Belgian Maison created in 1829 and the inventor of the modern handbag, celebrated its partnership with the Saul Steinberg Foundation with an intimate evening to welcome a special Saul Steinberg installation at Delvaux Fifth Avenue.
First presented in Paris, the dialogue between Delvaux and Saul Steinberg extends to New York City - a place that played a central role in the artist’s life and creativity. Steinberg, who settled in New York in 1942, created many of his most celebrated works here, including his iconic drawings and covers for The New Yorker.
At its center stands a facsimile of The Cocktail Party from The Americans, accompanied by original works by Saul Steinberg, lent by the Saul Steinberg Foundation. Playful and elegant, the scene captures New York’s festive energy and spirit - in the very city where the word cocktail itself was born. Long kept in the archives of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, The Americans resurface through Delvaux’s dialogue with its own emblematic design, the Brillant, created during the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. Inspired by the architecture of the Philips Pavilion by Le Corbusier, the Brillant remains, alongside The Americans and the Atomium, one of the enduring symbols of Expo 58 - each a celebration of imagination, innovation, and timeless design.
Opened on November 11, the installation unfolds at Delvaux Fifth Avenue, overlooking Central Park. Each Delvaux boutique is distinct in design and atmosphere - a bridge between Brussels, Delvaux’s birthplace, and the city it inhabits.
This project continues Delvaux’s tradition of collaboration with major art institutions, such as its previous presentation of original paintings by René Magritte, in partnership with the Magritte Foundation.
Co-hosted by Cécile Winckler and Jean-Marc Loubier, CEO of Delvaux, the celebration began with cocktails at Delvaux Fifth Avenue, followed by an intimate dinner attended by local tastemakers and friends of the Maison.
